Wh/aack into the House is an introduction series to the street/club dance styles of Wh/aacking and House dance. The workshop invites dancers with and without street/club dance experience. Volume three highlights working on a combination that welcomes your story through the vocabulary of House and Wh/aacking.
Lyzah and Josh will touch on the foundations of House and Wh/aacking, exploring the body’s natural groove to House and Disco. Warming up the cardiovascular system and rhythm through House moves by Josh, grounding the body through awareness of the floor to the finger tips inspired by Lyzah’s Wh/aacking practice and exchanging energy with other participants. Wh/aack into the House offers a soft goal to empower individuals to feel freedom and joy combining these two styles.
Lyzah / Alyssa (they/them/sha) is a transient being who moves through the world with curiosity and love. An experimental performance artist whose practice includes creating, facilitating, organizing. As a facilitator they explore by the play between laughter and rigour in learning spaces and dancing for joy. Lyzah has made waves within the wh/aacking scene particularly within “Vancouver” and “Montreal” through battling, teaching and performance. Alyssa works to honour their street/club dance lineages which includes being introduced to Wh/aacking through Rina Pellerin, being mentored by Marie-Reine “Mqueen” Kabasha and Khoudia Touré as well as training with OG’s Archie Burnett and Tyrone Proctor.
For the majority of his 17 year artistic practice, Josh “Jammin’” Cameron has primarily focused on researching and developing his proficiency and immersion in Street, Club and Cultural Dance with emphasis on Breaking, Hip Hop, and House as well as Hustle, Dancehall, Vogue, Locking, Popping, Litefeet and Waacking. He has a deep and long standing practice of immersing himself in the complex and diverse facets of cultural gatherings including but not limited to battles, clubbing, Ballroom events, and traditional knowledge transfer from the expertise of Pioneers and Innovators worldwide.
